A survey in 2004 revealed that the song thrush, and other garden birds, had a good year.
Ringing studies undertaken by the
BTO detected a 57% increase in the numbers of young song thrushes (
Turdus philomelos), a 'red listed' species which has undergone a dramatic decline over the last few decades. Other garden birds that did well were dunnocks (
Prunella modularis), blackbirds (
Turdus merula), great tits (
Parus major) and blue tits (
Parus caeruleus). The wet summer (which makes the earthworms easier to come by) and more sensitive farming practices have been suggested as reasons for the thrushes' increase.
